Vascular surgeons are involved in the removal of large and complex cancers that are stuck to or invading blood vessels. Some patients develop cancers or tumours from within the blood vessel- the commonest being an IVC Leiomyosarcoma.
Unfortunately, many patients with large tumours especially Renal Cell Cancer (Kidney tumors) or cancers of the Uterus or Ovary are denied surgery if the blood vessels are involved. For many patients cure and removal of all or most of the tumor can be achieved.
Removal of these tumors often needs repair or reconstruction of the critical blood vessels.
These surgeries are done jointly by the Vascular Surgeons with the relevant specialists- either Urology or Gynae Oncology or Gastro-intestinal surgeons.
No tumor should be considered untreatable due to blood vessel involvement unless it has been adequately assessed by a vascular surgeon with expertise in the management of these tumors.
Dr Robbie George and the team have developed a great deal of experience in this complex surgery as they work very closely with the cancer surgeons of the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Centre that is an integral part of the Narayana Health City.
