Patients Diagnosed with a Large Aortic Aneurysm

Mr PB a 78 year old was diagnosed elsewhere to have a large aortic aneurysm. An aneurysm is a weakening and ballooning of the aorta-the main blood carrying pipe of the body. When the blood vessels becomes weak it may burst and the patient can bleed to death.

Mr PB was quite weak with previous heart problems and diabetes and previous lung infections.

He was seen by us for the aneurysm and was it was deemed necessary to repair the large aneurysm.

Such aneurysms can be repaired by open surgery or by minimally invasive stent graft procedures. Whether or not a patient is suitable for either of these procedures depends upon the shape of the aneurysm, its size, location and the general health of the patient.

As Vascular and Endovascular surgeons we are experts at both kind of repairs and can choose which procedure would be more appropriate for which patient.

Our assessment of Mr PB was that he would be better with a stent graft procedure even though the shape of his aneurysm was complex with two large defects and many twists and turns. However we could plan the procedure and it was carried out successfully through tiny 1/2 cm wounds in the leg.

Mr PB was able to walk and eat and rink normally the same evening and went home after 2 days.

He will continue to stay under our follow up and surveillance program.
